Parliament Secretariat Finalizes Preparations for Newly Elected MPs’ Oath Ceremony
With the general election scheduled for February 12, the Secretariat is working around the clock to ensure a seamless and dignified swearing-in ceremony. All relevant departments are currently coordinating to finalize protocol, security arrangements, and logistical support for the historic transition.
According to sources within the Parliament Secretariat, essential renovation and beautification works at the main venue are nearly complete. This includes deep cleaning of the interior and exterior of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and decorative upgrades to the oath-taking hall. Kaniz Maula, the Secretary of the Bangladesh National Parliament Secretariat, recently chaired a high-level meeting with senior officials to review the progress. During the session, she issued strict instructions to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and decorum during the proceedings.
Given the unique political context of 2026, where the Speaker position is currently vacant and the Deputy Speaker is in custody, discussions are ongoing regarding who will administer the oath. Law Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul previously clarified that if the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are unavailable, the President may nominate a person—such as the Chief Justice—to administer the oath. Alternatively, the Chief Election Commissioner has the authority to do so if the three-day period following the gazette notification lapses. The Secretariat aims to initiate the process as soon as the final election results are officially gazetted, ensuring that the new legislature can begin its term without delay.
