Election Commission Dismisses Reports of Vote Postponement
In an emergency notice released today, the Commission clarified that the voting will proceed as scheduled on Thursday, February 12. The EC Secretariat identified these reports as a deliberate attempt by a "vested interest group" to spread confusion and anxiety among the general electorate through fabricated news.
The EC emphasized that the general election will take place in 299 parliamentary constituencies, with the exception of Sherpur-3, where the vote has been postponed following the death of the Jamaat-e-Islami candidate, Md. Nuruzzaman Badal. Aside from this single constituency, all other preparations across the nation are complete, and law enforcement agencies are fully mobilized at the field level to ensure a peaceful environment. The commission urged the public not to pay heed to any unverified information shared on digital platforms and warned that legal action is being initiated to identify and prosecute those behind the misinformation.
Reiterating its commitment to a transparent democratic process, the Election Commission assured voters that their safety is a top priority and encouraged everyone to exercise their right to vote without fear. The commission reaffirmed that the national referendum for state reform and the parliamentary elections are central to the country’s transition and will be held in accordance with the established timeline to reflect the will of the people.
