Speaking at a press conference in Dhanmondi today, TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman stated that while holding a referendum and the general election on the same day is a positive step, the process is being severely tainted by the blatant misuse of money, muscle power, and religious sentiment.

Dr. Iftekharuzzaman specifically condemned the recent detention of 21 employees of the online media outlet 'Bangladesh Times' by law enforcement agencies, describing the act as a "medieval tactic" and a grave assault on the freedom of the press. TIB's observations further highlighted growing anxieties among political parties regarding voter migration and the inclusion of new voters during the list updates. The organization also criticized the Election Commission for ignoring public opinion during the recent delimitation of parliamentary constituencies, which led to widespread rail and road blockades and violent clashes across the country.

The anti-corruption watchdog also noted significant dissatisfaction among rival political groups regarding the lack of proper verification during the registration of new political parties and the perceived lack of neutrality in the allocation of electoral symbols. According to TIB, these systemic irregularities and the Election Commission's failure to maintain a level playing field pose a significant threat to the possibility of a free, fair, and inclusive election. The press conference concluded with a call for immediate intervention to prevent the electoral process from being dictated by financial influence and administrative bias.
