Speaking at a press briefing with journalists at the Sylhet Press Club on Friday afternoon, Jacobs noted that the relationship between Bangladesh and the European Union is long-standing and strong. He said the EU hopes Bangladesh will continue to emerge as a dynamic and democratic state.

Jacobs emphasized that the upcoming election is historically significant, as it will help strengthen democratic institutions through the ballot box. He stressed that a transparent and credible electoral process is essential.

Responding to questions, he said the EU-EOM operates based on three core principles: independence, neutrality, and non-interference. The mission will observe the electoral process but will not certify the election results, as the election belongs solely to the people of Bangladesh.

He added that the EU believes Bangladesh is capable of organizing an inclusive and credible election. A preliminary observation report will be released in Dhaka on 14 February, two days after polling, followed by a press conference. A comprehensive final report with recommendations for future elections will be published approximately two months later.

Jacobs said nearly 200 observers from EU member states, as well as Canada, Norway, and Switzerland, will be part of the mission. The team includes 11 core analysts based in Dhaka, 56 long-term observers deployed across all 64 districts, 90 short-term observers arriving shortly before election day, and diplomats from EU and partner countries. A delegation from the European Parliament will further strengthen the mission.

He noted that the mission will follow internationally recognized principles for election observation and aims to build public confidence in the electoral process. The EU-EOM will also assess the overall political environment, including the participation of women, youth, and vulnerable groups, as well as media and social media coverage and voters’ access to information.

The EU observation mission was deployed at the invitation of the Government of Bangladesh for the national parliamentary election scheduled for 12 February 2026. This marks the first full-scale EU election observation mission in Bangladesh since 2008.
