No Live Rounds Fired During Protest at Jamuna: Interim Government
In a statement issued on Friday evening (6 February) by the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing, it was said that protesters under the banner of Inqilab Mancha began demonstrating in front of the state guest house Jamuna on the afternoon of 5 February, despite a ban on gatherings in the area. Initially, no force was used by law enforcement personnel.
According to the statement, when protesters attempted to break through barricades and move toward Jamuna on Friday, and some climbed onto a water cannon, authorities used sound grenades and water cannons to bring the situation under control. The government categorically denied the use of firearms or live bullets during the operation.
The statement emphasized that all gatherings around Jamuna and adjacent areas are prohibited to maintain public order and ensure the security of the Chief Adviser. In this context, police dispersed the protesters in a lawful and procedural manner. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police also confirmed that no firearms were used.
Information from the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital indicates that a total of 23 people, including Inqilab Mancha’s Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber, received medical treatment. However, doctors confirmed that none of the injured had gunshot wounds.
The government reiterated its commitment to ensuring justice for the killing of Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi. It also stated that the legal aspects of conducting an investigation under the United Nations are being reviewed, and a formal letter will be sent to the relevant UN body on Sunday, 8 February.
Rejecting allegations of excessive use of force, the government urged all citizens to exercise patience, restraint, and responsibility during this sensitive political period ahead of the upcoming election.
The statement concluded by stressing that a free, fair, neutral, and participatory election is crucial for Bangladesh’s democratic progress and can only be achieved through collective responsibility and cooperation.
