Nearly 6,000 Inmates Cast Votes via Postal Ballots in Prisons Across Bangladesh
Motaher Hossain, Inspector General of Prisons, personally inspected the voting process at Dhaka Central Jail in Keraniganj. He confirmed that ballot papers were delivered to the prisons via mail beforehand and noted that due to a public holiday on February 4, the Election Commission has extended the voting period until February 6.
According to Senior Jail Superintendent Suraiya Akter, ten booths have been established inside the Keraniganj facility, where inmates are voting after receiving necessary guidance on the postal ballot system. While general inmates began voting on Tuesday, high-profile political figures currently in custody—including former ministers Rashed Khan Menon and Hasanul Haq Inu—are scheduled to cast their votes on February 5 and 6. This initiative ensures that despite being behind bars, these citizens can still participate in the electoral process of their respective constituencies, marking a step forward in inclusive governance.
