Bangladesh Invites India to Observe General Election and Referendum
In addition to India, several other nations—including Nepal, Australia, Canada, France, and Brazil—have been invited to send observer missions and are currently in the process of finalizing their representatives.
The Office of Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus stated that there is significant international interest in monitoring this election. To date, 330 international observers have confirmed their participation, a figure that is more than double the number present during the controversial 2024 general election. Confirmed missions include delegations from the European Union (EU), the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the Asian Network for Free Elections (ANFREL). Representatives from the International Republican Institute (IRI), the National Democratic Institute (NDI), and at least 16 other countries will also be present.
Lamiya Murshed, the official coordinating international observers, noted that the number of participants is expected to rise as more invited countries confirm their delegates. Approximately 2,000 candidates from over 50 political parties and independent ranks are competing for 300 parliamentary seats. On the same day, a historic referendum will be held to decide on major reforms to executive powers as proposed in the July National Charter.
