The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC), chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, approved the mega-project on Sunday. With an estimated cost of Tk 2,459.35 crore—largely funded by a grant from the Chinese government—the hospital is scheduled to be completed by December 2029.

Located in Nilphamari Sadar Upazila, the 10-story facility aims to decentralize specialized medical services. In addition to general care, the hospital will house advanced departments such as Nephrology, Cardiology, Oncology, and Neurology. Equipped with modern ICUs, CCUs, and state-of-the-art operating theaters, it will provide critical care that was previously unavailable in the region. Professor Yunus emphasized that the project is a strategic investment designed to reduce the overwhelming pressure on hospitals in Dhaka and Rangpur.

Beyond serving the local population, the hospital is positioned to become a regional healthcare hub, potentially attracting patients from neighboring Nepal and Bhutan. The project will also act as a significant economic driver, creating approximately 3,500 jobs, including positions for 893 doctors and 1,197 nurses. The infrastructure plan includes dedicated dormitories, residential buildings, and administrative housing to support this large workforce.

For the 2.1 million residents of Nilphamari, this hospital addresses a long-standing grievance regarding inadequate medical facilities. Currently, patients with serious conditions must endure expensive and risky journeys to distant cities for treatment. Once operational, the Bangladesh-China Friendship General Hospital will ensure timely, high-quality care, significantly reducing both the suffering and the financial burden on the people of the north.
