Why Vote Counting Might Take Longer: EC Secretary Explains Challenges for 13th General Election
The significant increase in the number of candidates and the processing of dual ballots are expected to slow down both voting and counting. A major challenge lies in the counting of postal ballots at Returning Officers' offices, with some constituencies like Feni and Comilla having over 10,000 to 16,000 registered postal voters. On the international front, the EC expects around 500 foreign observers and journalists, including a large delegation from the European Union.
To curb the influence of illegal money, the commission is considering transaction limits for mobile and internet banking during the polls. According to latest data, 1,981 candidates are in the fray, with BNP fielding the highest number of candidates at 288. The EC remains vigilant against election code violations and is coordinating with over 16,000 BNCC volunteers to maintain law and order.
