Ordinance Passed for 'Dhaka Central University' Merging Seven Colleges
Education Adviser Professor Chowdhury Rafiqul Abrar (C.R. Abrar) personally delivered the news to the protesting students via telephone. When the message reached students gathered in front of Dhaka College around 2:00 PM, the area erupted in celebration. Students were seen chanting the name of the new university and distributing sweets to mark the historic victory.
Since their affiliation with Dhaka University in 2017—a move conducted without adequate preparation—the seven colleges have faced severe administrative hurdles and persistent session jams. For seven years, students have campaigned for an independent university to resolve these deep-rooted issues. The seven institutions involved are: Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Women's College, Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Government Bangla College, Government Titumir College.
This government decision brings an end to years of uncertainty. Sources from the Ministry of Education have indicated that administrative frameworks will be established promptly to begin the university's operations. Following the announcement, student representatives welcomed the decision and withdrew all ongoing street protests, urging peers to avoid any further programs that might cause public suffering.
