Prof. Yunus Seeks UN Assistance to Combat Misinformation
During the discussion, Professor Yunus noted that a "flood" of fake news has emerged surrounding the election. He stated that misleading information is being spread through both international media and various local sources. He expressed the government’s concern over the widespread dissemination of false news, rumors, and speculative information on social media, which could pose a threat to a fair and acceptable electoral process.
In response, Volker Türk stated that the UN Human Rights Office has taken note of the situation. He assured that the UN would stand by Bangladesh in addressing the growing challenge of disinformation. Türk mentioned that the volume of misinformation is significant and affirmed that his office is ready to provide all necessary support. He also noted that the UN human rights agency would work closely with Bangladesh to this end.
The telephonic conversation also covered the upcoming election, the necessity of institutional reforms, the activities of the Commission on Disappearances, the formation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and the global geopolitical situation.
Volker Türk emphasized the importance of establishing a truly independent National Human Rights Commission to advance investigations into enforced disappearances. In response, Professor Yunus informed him that the National Human Rights Commission Ordinance has already been issued, and the commission will be reconstituted before the elections.
The Chief Adviser further mentioned that he has handed over the final report of the Commission on Disappearances to the UN High Commissioner. He noted that this report would play a crucial role in ensuring accountability and justice for enforced disappearances that occurred between 2009 and 2024.
Lamiya Morshed, SDG Coordinator and Senior Secretary, was present during the telephone call.
