Upcoming Election Will Determine Bangladesh’s Future: Chief Adviser
Dr. Yunus made these remarks on 13 January, Tuesday at the inauguration of the three-day South Asian regional conference titled “Current Status and Future Directions of Higher Education–2026”, held at a hotel in the capital.
He emphasized that education should not be viewed merely as a tool for securing employment, as doing so undermines its true purpose. According to Dr. Yunus, the primary goal of education should be to awaken creativity and teach individuals to think independently.
Dr. Yunus further stated that students should be developed not only as job seekers but also as job creators. He highlighted the importance of fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, imagination, and the courage to innovate within the education system.
The Chief Adviser described South Asia as a region full of potential. However, he noted that political instability, social divisions, and misguided policies often prevent this potential from being fully realized. He added that education can serve as a force that empowers the region’s youth to lead transformative change.
Dr. Yunus also remarked that young people have political ambitions, and many are expected to win in the upcoming elections. He encouraged the youth to be visionary and dream big.
The conference reportedly includes around 30 international representatives, including participants from the United Kingdom, Maldives, Malaysia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and officials from the World Bank, according to a statement from the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh.
The UGC also noted that the conference is organized under the “Higher Education Acceleration and Transformation (HEAT)” project, implemented with support from the Bangladesh government and the World Bank.
