BNP Leader Dulu Acquitted in 18-Year-Old Tax Evasion Case
On January 11, Judge Rabiul Alam of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 delivered the verdict. Dulu was present in court during the announcement.
His lawyer, Borhan Uddin, described the case as "harassment," noting that the court acquitted Dulu after reviewing the testimonies of four witnesses from the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The case was initiated on August 3, 2008, by Hafiz Al Asad, an Assistant Commissioner of Taxes at the NBR. The prosecution alleged that between 1983 and 2008, Dulu evaded 10 lakh BDT in taxes against an income of 2.34 crore BDT by providing false financial information.
Although Dulu initially challenged the legality of the case in the High Court, the ruling went against him. Formal charges were framed on April 9, 2023, leading to the trial. After hearing witness testimonies and the defendant’s plea, the court found him not guilty.
Ruhul Quddus Talukdar Dulu is currently the BNP candidate for the Natore-2 (Sadar and Naldanga) constituency in the upcoming 13th Parliamentary Elections.
