Facebook Login Now Mandatory as Meta Phases Out Messenger.com
This decision to remove direct browser access to Messenger marks a significant shift for users who prefer the dedicated messaging interface. The move follows the previous decommissioning of standalone Messenger desktop applications for Windows and Mac, signaling a complete transition away from independent web versions of the service.
According to Meta, starting April 6, any user attempting to access Messenger.com will be automatically redirected to the messaging page within the main Facebook site (facebook.com/messages). This change makes the use of the primary Facebook website mandatory for those wishing to chat via PC or laptop browsers. However, the company clarified that there will be no changes to the Messenger experience on Android and iOS mobile applications, where the service will continue to operate as usual.
The impact of this decision will be most felt by users who utilized Messenger without an active Facebook account or those who preferred to keep their social media and messaging activities separate. From the effective date, there will be no alternative for browser-based communication other than logging into the full desktop version of Facebook. Originally launched as a standalone app in 2011, Messenger is now being fully reintegrated into Meta's core social networking platform. Users who regularly rely on PCs for messaging are advised to ensure their Facebook login credentials are ready for the transition.
