River Levels Rise in Netrokona and Habiganj Sparking Pre-Monsoon Flood Warnings
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) reported that moderate to heavy rainfall over the last 24 hours in Netrokona, Sunamganj, and Brahmanbaria has triggered this sudden rise. Specifically, 65 mm of rainfall was recorded in Durgapur, Netrokona, while Brahmanbaria saw 62 mm. As of 9:00 AM today, the Magra River in Netrokona is flowing at a significant 85 cm above the danger level. Other major rivers, including the Dhanu-Baulai, Someswari, and Vogai-Kangsha, also remain above their respective danger marks, causing concern for local inhabitants.
The situation in Habiganj is similarly critical, with the Kalni and Sutang rivers flowing 29 cm and 55 cm above the danger level, respectively. Despite these rising levels in several districts, there is a slight relief in the Sunamganj region, where river levels have begun to recede slowly. According to the Meteorological Department, while isolated showers are expected over the next five days, the probability of heavy rainfall remains low for the immediate future. However, a trend of increased precipitation is predicted after this five-day window. On a positive note, Cherrapunji in India recorded only 10 mm of rain in the last 24 hours, suggesting that the pressure from upstream hilly slopes may ease temporarily, providing a brief window for the water levels to stabilize.
