12 Students Detained for Loitering After Sunset; Released on Bond
The drive, led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Ibrahim, targeted groups gathered in public spaces despite a pre-announced prohibition. After several hours of detention, the students were released to their guardians upon signing a formal undertaking (Muchleka) promising to abide by the rules in the future.
Prior to the operation, the administration had conducted public announcements across the region, strictly warning school and college students against gathering at street corners, parks, restaurants, or campus grounds after dusk. The initiative was prompted by a disturbing rise in drug abuse and a noticeable decline in academic focus among local youth. Despite the clear warnings, many were found ignoring the directives, leading to the late-night enforcement drive.
UNO Md. Ibrahim stated that the decision to restrict post-sunset loitering was unanimously adopted during a recent monthly law and order committee meeting. He emphasized that the goal is to protect students from the influence of narcotics and ensure they remain dedicated to their education. While the detained students were released after a primary warning, the UNO asserted that such crackdowns will continue and become more stringent to ensure a safe and drug-free environment for the younger generation.
