Government Moves to Reopen HSC Section at Eden Mohila College
On March 25, 2026, the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education issued an official directive instructing the college authorities to submit a formal proposal through the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (DSHE).
In a letter signed by Deputy Secretary Kazi Nurul Islam, the ministry requested the Principal of Eden College to provide specific historical and logistical data to facilitate the decision:
Historical Context: The college must clarify the exact year and the specific reasons why the HSC section was discontinued in the past.
Financial Implications: The ministry has asked for a detailed assessment of whether the resumption of HSC classes will require any additional government funding or infrastructure allocation.
Logistical Readiness: Information regarding available classrooms, faculty strength, and administrative capacity to handle a new influx of higher secondary students.
Eden Mohila College, established in 1873, is one of the oldest and most prestigious female education centers in the region. While it currently operates as a premier institution for Honours and Master's degrees under the affiliation of the University of Dhaka, the decision to bring back the intermediate section is seen as a move to restore its traditional academic structure and provide more high-quality seats for female students in the capital.
The proposal from the college is expected to be submitted to DSHE within the next few weeks, after which the ministry will finalize the timeline for the first batch of HSC admissions.
