Under existing federal law, individuals with arrears exceeding $2,500 are now at risk of having their passports revoked. The department emphasized that this measure aims to enforce the legal and moral obligations of parents toward their children’s welfare. Previously, such consequences were mostly faced during passport renewals, but the government is now moving toward direct revocation for those with substantial debt.

Once a passport is canceled, the individual will remain ineligible for international travel or a new passport until the outstanding balance is settled with relevant government agencies.
