According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the repatriation process is set to begin shortly and is expected to be completed within the next six months to a year. This move marks a sharp pivot in transatlantic military cooperation and highlights a deepening diplomatic rift within the NATO alliance.

The decision was reportedly triggered by recent remarks from German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who on Monday criticized Washington’s strategic handling of the Iran-US-Israel conflict. Merz asserted that the U.S. had failed to determine an effective military strategy and suggested that Iran was successfully "humiliating" the United States. A senior Pentagon official described the Chancellor’s comments as "inappropriate and uncooperative," confirming that President Donald Trump ordered the troop reduction as a direct response to these negative statements.

Currently, the United States maintains a presence of approximately 35,000 troops and 50 military bases across Germany. The 5,000 personnel slated for withdrawal are those who were additionally deployed during the Joe Biden administration at Germany's request following the outbreak of the Ukraine war. President Trump has repeatedly accused European and NATO allies of failing to support the U.S. in its current geopolitical stances. This friction extends beyond Berlin, as Trump has also entered into disputes with Spain and Italy over similar issues. After threatening Spain with trade sanctions, the President hinted yesterday that military withdrawals from Spain and Italy might also be under consideration.
