Trump’s Portrait to Feature in Limited Edition US Passport for ‘America 250’
According to a report by The Guardian, this special edition is set to be released this summer. The decision to include the image of a sitting political leader in a national document intended to celebrate two and a half centuries of freedom from monarchy has ignited a fierce national debate.
State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott explained that the special passport utilizes advanced imaging and customized artwork. The portrait will be surrounded by a watermark of the American flag, excerpts from the Declaration of Independence, and the President’s signature embossed in gold. This initiative is part of the Trump administration's broader "America 250" program, which also includes plans for colorful events such as a UFC fight on the White House lawn and a Grand Prix race on the National Mall.
Critics, however, have labeled the move as a form of state-sponsored "personality cult." This follows previous instances where President Trump’s image was placed alongside Abraham Lincoln’s in the Department of Agriculture and beside George Washington’s on the 2026 National Park Pass. Furthermore, approval has been granted for a 250-foot-tall golden victory arch in Washington, D.C., tentatively named "Arc de Trump." Opponents argue that this arch, which is designed to surpass the height of Capitol Hill and the Lincoln Memorial, alongside proposals to feature the President’s likeness on currency, represents an attempt to overshadow iconic American institutions with personal branding. While the administration maintains these are simply ways to commemorate a historic milestone, the measures continue to face significant backlash from constitutional scholars and the public alike.
