The move comes following widespread global criticism after FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the award to U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington last December. The timing and nature of the accolade have sparked a heated debate within the international football community regarding the governing body’s involvement in global politics.

Lise Klaveness, the President of the Norwegian Football Association, has taken a firm stand, asserting that it is not within FIFA’s mandate to issue global political awards that have no direct link to the sport of football. Speaking to reporters, Klaveness stated that independent bodies like the Nobel Institute exist for such honors. She argued that by awarding the prize to Trump during the World Cup draw event in Washington, FIFA violated its commitment to maintaining political neutrality as a sports governing body.

Furthermore, Klaveness alleged that no formal legal or institutional policy was followed within FIFA prior to the issuance of this award. The human rights advocacy group ‘FairSquare’ has already filed a formal complaint with the FIFA Ethics Committee regarding the matter, a move that Norway has now officially pledged to support. The issue is expected to be a major point of contention at the upcoming FIFA Congress starting April 30 in Vancouver, Canada. Lise Klaveness is prepared to raise the matter forcefully, presenting a significant challenge to FIFA’s current leadership and their discretionary award-giving practices.
