Putin Receives Special Message from Iran’s New Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei
This development was disclosed during a high-stakes meeting between Putin and Iranian Foreign Minister Sayyid Abbas Araghchi in St. Petersburg on Tuesday. This interaction marks the first formal, high-level diplomatic contact between Tehran and Moscow since Mojtaba Khamenei assumed leadership following the death of his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, in a joint US-Israeli airstrike on February 28.
At the start of the meeting, President Putin requested the Foreign Minister to convey his regards and wishes for good health to the Supreme Leader. While the specific contents of the message remain confidential, Putin expressed profound admiration for Iran’s steadfast stance against U.S. pressure amidst the current regional crisis. He noted the bravery and heroism displayed by the Iranian people in defending their independence and sovereignty. Putin further assured that Russia remains committed to maximum cooperation to protect Iranian interests and facilitate a swift restoration of regional stability.
The transition of power in Tehran comes during a period of immense personal and national turmoil. Mojtaba Khamenei was himself seriously injured in the February 28 attack that claimed his father's life. Although the Guardian Council officially declared him the new Supreme Leader on March 8, he is currently receiving medical treatment at an undisclosed, secure location. Reports from CNN, citing sources close to the leader’s circle, suggest he may have sustained permanent physical injuries. Despite these health challenges, the delivery of this message to the Kremlin is seen by geopolitical analysts as a strong signal that the military and strategic alliance between Russia and Iran is set to intensify.
