Iran and Pakistan Commit to Joint Cooperation for Regional Security and Peace
According to a report by Pakistan's Dawn newspaper, the top leaders emphasized the maintenance of peace and stability in South Asia during the discussions held in Islamabad. The strategic importance of the visit was underscored by the participation of Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and National Security Advisor General Asim Malik.
The Iranian Embassy confirmed that both nations have agreed to further strengthen existing security cooperation. The Iranian delegation included Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei and the Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan, Reza Amiri Moghadam. Upon his arrival in Islamabad on Friday night, the Iranian Foreign Minister was received by Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, alongside General Asim Munir. Discussions primarily focused on border security and increasing mutual trust to combat terrorism between the two neighboring countries.
Political analysts view this visit as highly significant amidst the ongoing deadlock between the United States and Iran over nuclear and other geopolitical issues. It is speculated that the talks may have touched upon Pakistan’s potential role as a key mediator or coordinator for a possible second round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington. As India reportedly plans to temporarily transfer its stakes in the Chabahar Port to avoid U.S. sanctions, this high-level diplomatic engagement between Iran and Pakistan signals a shift in the geopolitical equations of the Middle East and South Asia.
