In a recent interview with France Inter Radio, Birol highlighted the precarious state of global energy supplies. "Between the petrol and gas crises and the situation surrounding Russia, this crisis has already become immense. This is truly the biggest crisis in history," Birol stated.

The IEA chief noted that the surging price of oil in international markets is exerting severe pressure on the global economy. Uncertainty in energy supply has reached a peak due to the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran in the Middle East, compounded by the situation in Ukraine.

In an unprecedented move to stabilize market volatility, IEA member countries decided in March to release a record 400 million barrels of oil from their strategic reserves. This represents the largest coordinated release in the agency's history.

Energy experts believe the crisis is being intensified by energy sanctions imposed on Russia by NATO-member states and the U.S. naval blockade in the Gulf region. These factors have severely damaged global supply chains, leading to a tightening of available resources.

Fatih Birol warned that without the rapid discovery of alternative energy sources and a return to geopolitical stability, overcoming this crisis will remain a long-term challenge. He also indicated that high oil prices could lead to significant inflation, affecting not only developing nations but also the developed world. The shift toward renewable energy and diversified supply routes is now seen as a critical necessity for global economic survival.
