Zelenskyy Slams US Distraction, Warns Iran War is Stalling Ukraine Peace Efforts
In an interview with Germany’s state broadcaster ZDF on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Zelenskyy noted that key mediators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are currently preoccupied with consecutive rounds of talks with Tehran. He warned that the Kremlin would lose all interest in peace if Washington continues to employ a "soft tone" rather than exerting maximum pressure on Vladimir Putin.
According to a report by AFP, U.S.-led efforts to end Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II have effectively stalled following the outbreak of the Iran war. There have been no formal high-level meetings between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators since the Geneva summit in February. Zelenskyy emphasized that the diversion of U.S. attention is not merely diplomatic; it has resulted in a critical slowdown of military aid, leaving Kyiv in an increasingly precarious position as the war enters its fifth year.
The President highlighted a severe shortage of air defense equipment, specifically pointing to supply issues regarding PAC-3 interceptor missiles and PAC-2 missiles. As U.S. resources are redirected toward the Middle East, the lack of these sophisticated defense systems has left Ukrainian cities and infrastructure vulnerable to intensified Russian strikes. "Kyiv is facing an extremely difficult situation due to this lack of weaponry," Zelenskyy stated, urging the West not to allow the Middle Eastern conflict to overshadow the existential threat in Eastern Europe.
In response to the waning U.S. support, Zelenskyy is moving to consolidate ties with European allies. During a recent visit to Norway, he signed a "Joint Declaration on Advanced Defense and Security Cooperation" with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Under this agreement, Ukrainian drones will now be manufactured on Norwegian soil. This follows a high-stakes meeting in Berlin with Chancellor Friedrich Merz, where Germany and Ukraine announced a new strategic defense partnership.
Despite these European initiatives, military analysts warn that Ukraine’s ability to sustain its defense remains heavily dependent on the resumption of American logistics and weaponry. The White House has yet to provide a formal timeline for balancing its dual involvement in both the Iranian and Ukrainian theaters. As the frontline remains static and the weapons supply chain thins, Zelenskyy's diplomatic offensive in Europe reflects a desperate search for security guarantees in a world increasingly distracted by new global flashpoints.
