Putin Proposes Mediation as Iran-US Talks Fail in Pakistan
In a crucial phone call on Sunday (April 12), Putin informed Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that Moscow is fully prepared to act as a mediator to restore peace and stability across the Middle East. According to a Kremlin statement, Russia aims to facilitate political and diplomatic resolutions to de-escalate regional tensions and achieve a "fair and lasting peace."
The diplomatic shift comes after US Vice President JD Vance and the Iranian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, departed Pakistan without reaching a consensus. While the US expressed disappointment over Tehran's rejection of their proposals, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, noted that despite significant progress on several issues, two or three critical points of contention remain. This vacuum has provided Russia with an opportunity to reinforce its influence as a central power broker in the ongoing regional crisis.
