IAEA Chief Warns of "Radiological Catastrophe" as Strikes Hit Near Iran’s Bushehr Plant
In a post on X on Monday (April 6), Grossi called for an immediate cessation of hostilities, stating that attacks so close to a nuclear facility could trigger a severe radiological accident with devastating consequences for the environment and public health across the region. He revealed that the most recent strike landed just 75 meters (246 feet) from the plant's perimeter, marking an escalation in risks following the joint U.S.-Israeli military campaign that began on February 28.
While IAEA satellite imagery confirmed that the reactor itself remains undamaged, the frequency of targeted strikes—four in recent weeks—has raised global alarms. Bushehr, built with Russian assistance, stands as Iran's only operational nuclear power reactor. According to Russian state media, 198 employees were evacuated following the latest incident, though approximately 100 Russian personnel remain on-site. Moscow is reportedly engaged in urgent diplomatic efforts with Tehran, Washington, and Tel Aviv to ensure the safety of its citizens. Grossi reiterated that nuclear installations must never be subjected to military action, emphasizing the fragile boundary between regional conflict and a global nuclear crisis.
