The incident occurred on Saturday, April 4, 2026, shortly after the vessel departed from the port of Tajoura amidst turbulent sea conditions. According to preliminary data from the Italian Coast Guard and a report confirmed by The New York Times on Sunday, 32 survivors have been rescued so far. The survivors include nationals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Egypt, who were pulled from the water by responding commercial vessels and coordinated rescue teams.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) reported that the vessel was carrying between 100 and 120 passengers when it encountered severe weather late Friday night. Survivors recounted that massive waves overwhelmed the boat, causing water to flood the hull before it overturned within Libyan territorial waters. Harrowing video footage released by the rescue organization 'Sea-Watch' showed at least 15 individuals clinging to the overturned hull and waving for help, surrounded by floating bodies in the open sea.

Two commercial ships, one Italian and one Liberian, participated in the initial rescue operations, and the survivors have since been transported to the Italian island of Lampedusa for medical treatment and processing. According to the IOM’s 'Missing Migrants Project,' more than 33,450 people have perished in the Mediterranean since 2014, with this year's death toll already exceeding 725. This latest tragedy follows a similar incident last week near Lampedusa where 19 bodies were recovered from a dinghy, 10 of whom were identified as residents of the Sunamganj district in Bangladesh. Human rights organizations have criticized the loss of life as a direct consequence of restrictive European migration policies rather than mere accidents.
