Myanmar’s military-appointed parliament has officially selected General Min Aung Hlaing as the nation's new President this Friday (April 3, 2026).

While the General has stepped down as Commander-in-Chief to comply with constitutional requirements, he has secured his grip on the military by appointing his close ally, General Ye Win Oo, as the new army chief. Critics argue that the recent elections—held five years after his initial one-year promise—were heavily rigged in favor of the military-backed USDP. Under Min Aung Hlaing’s direct command, Myanmar has descended into a brutal civil war that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions. Despite losing significant territory to resistance forces, the new "civilian" government is expected to continue its lethal "four cuts" strategy and nationwide airstrikes to maintain control.
