70 Killed in Horrific Gang Massacre in Haiti's Breadbasket
According to reports from Al Jazeera and Reuters on Monday, March 30, 2026, the human rights group Défenseurs Plus confirmed the massacre, noting that the actual death toll far exceeds the initial government estimate of 16.
Members of the notorious 'Gran Grif' gang launched the raid around 3:00 a.m. on Sunday, March 29, in the rural communities of Jean-Denis and Petite-Rivière. The violence continued into the early hours of Monday.
Brutality: Attackers reportedly gunned down residents fleeing their homes, while others were executed at point-blank range. At least 50 houses were set on fire.
Mass Displacement: The rights group reported that approximately 6,000 people have been forced to flee their homes, adding to the more than one million Haitians already displaced by gang conflict.
Injuries: At least 30 people were reported injured, with several others still missing.
The massacre has drawn sharp criticism toward the Haitian authorities for their perceived "abdication of responsibility." While police deployed three armored vehicles to the area, their progress was reportedly blocked by large trenches dug by the gang members to prevent security forces from entering their strongholds.
UN Condemnation: A spokesperson for UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack, stating that the death toll could potentially reach 80. The UN urged a thorough investigation and highlighted the extreme gravity of the security situation.
Motive: An audio message attributed to Gran Grif leader Luckson Elan suggested the attack was retaliation against the local population for allegedly supporting rival armed groups or defying the gang's authority.
Since 2021, gang-related violence in Haiti has claimed nearly 20,000 lives. While the conflict was previously concentrated in the capital, Port-au-Prince, it has now spread north into the Artibonite department, threatening the country's primary source of food. Earlier in March, the U.S. government designated Gran Grif as a terrorist organization and offered a $3 million reward for information leading to the disruption of its financial networks.
