Tragedy at Zojila Pass: 7 Dead, 5 Injured as Avalanches Bury Vehicles
The disaster occurred in the high-altitude stretch between Zero Point and Minimarg near the Zojila Pass, a critical link between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh.
Current Situation:
Casualties: The death toll rose to seven after rescue teams recovered two more bodies during predawn operations on Saturday. The deceased include three men, one woman, and a child.
The Incident: A massive volume of snow engulfed approximately 12 to 15 vehicles traveling toward Kargil. Some vehicles were found completely buried under nearly 30 feet of snow and debris.
Rescue Operations: A multi-agency team—including the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), Army, SDRF, and local police—worked through sub-zero temperatures to pull five survivors from the wreckage. They are currently receiving intensive care at District Hospital Kargil.
Official Response: Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena confirmed that all government agencies are on high alert. The highway remains closed as crews work on war footing to clear the massive snow slides.
