Six Dead in Switzerland Bus Fire Following Suspected Arson
The incident occurred on Tuesday evening, March 10, 2026, at approximately 6:25 PM local time in the town of Kerzers, Fribourg Canton, located about 20 kilometers west of the capital, Bern. Initial reports from the Fribourg police suggest that the fire may have been a "deliberate act" carried out by someone inside the vehicle, prompting the opening of a criminal investigation.
The regional PostBus was traveling on its final route from Düdingen to Kerzers when it was suddenly engulfed in flames on Murtenstrasse. Emergency services arrived to find the vehicle completely consumed by the inferno, leaving only a charred shell. Aside from the six fatalities, at least five others were injured, including three who were airlifted to hospitals in critical condition. One emergency responder was also treated for injuries sustained during the rescue operation.
While social media reports suggested that an individual may have doused themselves in gasoline before setting the fire, police spokesperson Frédéric Papaux stated that authorities could not yet confirm these specifics. However, officials noted that there were no signs of a collision with another vehicle, reinforcing the theory of a "voluntary act" originating from within. Swiss President Guy Parmelin expressed his deep condolences to the families of the victims, noting that the tragedy has shocked the nation particularly as it comes only months after a devastating fire at a resort in Crans-Montana.
