In a high-stakes telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Erdoğan emphasized that breaching Turkish sovereignty "cannot be justified under any circumstances." He further noted that launching strikes against regional nations does not serve the interests of any party and only exacerbates the ongoing conflict.

The diplomatic friction intensified after NATO’s air defense systems intercepted and shot down a second Iranian ballistic missile that entered Turkish airspace on Monday. During a cabinet meeting last night, Erdoğan expressed deep concern, stating that despite Turkey’s sincere warnings, Iran continues to take "highly erroneous and provocative steps" that jeopardize their long-standing bilateral friendship. As a key NATO member with the alliance's second-largest army and a 500-year stable border with Iran, Turkey is uniquely positioned. Much like his roles in the Ukraine and Gaza crises, Erdoğan is now attempting to position himself as a crucial mediator, urging for diplomatic solutions to prevent a wider regional war.
