Trump Rejects Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s New Supreme Leader
In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump stated he was "not happy" with the selection, labeling the 56-year-old son of the late Ali Khamenei as an "unacceptable" choice and a "lightweight." During a separate interview with ABC News, the President went further, issuing a direct warning that any new Iranian leader would not "last long" without Washington’s approval. Trump suggested that the U.S. expects to have a say in the country's future leadership to ensure a long-term resolution to the ongoing conflict, which escalated after the assassination of the elder Khamenei on February 28.
In Tehran, the appointment has been met with a show of absolute unity from the military and political establishment. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) immediately pledged "complete obedience" to Mojtaba Khamenei, while members of the Assembly of Experts defended the choice as a strategic necessity. Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari Alekasir, a prominent member of the Assembly, remarked that Iran’s leader should be someone "hated by the enemy" rather than praised by them, citing this as a badge of revolutionary honor. This stark divide between Washington’s demands for a "Great and Acceptable" leader and Tehran’s insistence on a hardline successor suggests that the "Operation Epic Fury" campaign may continue to intensify as both nations dig into their respective positions.
