The opposition arises from allegations that the Trump administration has failed to provide a clear objective or a definitive timeline for the ongoing hostilities. While a bilateral $900 billion defense budget was approved last year, the administration is now seeking supplemental funds to cover the war’s soaring costs, which analysts estimate exceed $890 million per day.

Appearing on NBC’s "Meet the Press," House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the administration for failing to justify the "self-declared" war in the Middle East. He noted that briefings have lacked transparency regarding the total projected costs or the expected duration of the mission. Echoing this sentiment on CNN, Senator Chris Murphy argued that opposing the funding is a necessary step to protect U.S. troops by bringing them home from harm's way. As some Republicans also begin to voice concerns over a prolonged conflict, securing additional military funding is becoming an uphill battle for the White House.
