Turkey Now an Iranian 'Target'? NATO Intercepts Iranian Ballistic Missile
On Wednesday (March 4), the Turkish Ministry of National Defense confirmed that a ballistic missile launched from Iran entered Turkish airspace after traversing Syria and Iraq. However, NATO’s integrated air and missile defense systems stationed in the Eastern Mediterranean successfully intercepted and destroyed the missile before it could reach its target. While the intended destination of the missile remains unclear, Ankara has issued a stern warning, stating it reserves the right to respond to any hostile actions against its sovereignty.
In the wake of this escalation, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a phone call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to register a formal protest. Fidan urged Iran to refrain from any actions that could further expand the regional conflict. Reuters reported that Turkey has cautioned all parties against increasing tensions, emphasizing that such provocative steps are detrimental to regional security. As a NATO member, Turkey’s involvement marks a significant shift in the geopolitical dynamics of the ongoing Middle East crisis.
