U.S. and Israel Justify Joint Strikes as Pre-emptive Action Against Iran

On Monday, March 2, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended the strikes as a "proactive defensive measure" necessitated by Israel's own plans. Rubio explained that once the Trump administration confirmed Israel was determined to strike Iranian targets, they realized American forces in the region would inevitably face retaliatory attacks. To minimize potential U.S. casualties, President Trump authorized pre-emptive strikes to dismantle Iran’s retaliatory capabilities—specifically its ballistic missile program and navy—before they could be deployed against American bases.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu echoed this urgency during an interview with Fox News, describing the operation as a "quick and decisive" effort to prevent a long-term catastrophe. He claimed that Iran had begun constructing sophisticated underground nuclear and missile facilities that would have become "immune" to conventional attacks within months. Netanyahu argued that the joint operation was the only way to ensure these programs were destroyed before they became untouchable, framing the war as a "gateway to peace" rather than an endless conflict. He asserted that the goal is to create conditions for the Iranian people to ultimately change their own government, which he described as the "weakest it has ever been."

The military campaign, codenamed "Epic Fury" by the U.S. and "Operation Roaring Lion" by Israel, has already resulted in significant geopolitical shifts, including the confirmed death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. While the White House maintains that the strikes were authorized under the President's inherent authority and Article 51 of the UN Charter for self-defense, the move has sparked intense debate in Washington. Members of the Congressional "Gang of Eight" were briefed on Monday evening, with some Democratic leaders questioning the "imminence" of the threat and expressing concern that the U.S. was essentially forced into a new war by Israeli decision-making.
