171 Bodies Recovered from Mass Graves in DR Congo
The graves were identified on Thursday in the Kiromoni and Kavimvira areas on the outskirts of Uvira in South Kivu province. According to Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi, 171 bodies have been recovered so far—30 from Kiromoni and 141 from Kavimvira.
The "Civilian Protection Network," a local human rights organization, has alleged that the victims fell prey to the brutality of M23 rebels. It is believed the rebels executed these individuals under the suspicion that they were members of government forces or pro-government militia groups. However, the Congolese army has cordoned off the areas, preventing independent organizations from entering to verify the data. Both the M23 group and government forces have faced serious allegations of human rights violations in this mineral-rich region, which has been plagued by conflict for decades.
The M23 rebels, who claim to defend the rights of the Tutsi community, recently captured key towns in North and South Kivu but announced a withdrawal from Uvira as part of a peace process. The Congolese government continues to accuse Rwanda of backing the rebel group. According to United Nations data, the protracted conflict in eastern Congo has displaced approximately 7 million people, creating one of the world's most dire humanitarian crises.
