Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed that the missiles, capable of intercepting aircraft and ballistic threats, are set to be stationed by the end of the 2030 fiscal year (March 2031).

This move is expected to further strain relations between Tokyo and Beijing, which are already in a diplomatic deadlock following remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. Last November, Takaichi stated that Japan might intervene if a Chinese attack on Taiwan posed an "existential threat" to Japan. China has reacted sharply to these developments, accusing Japan of "remilitarization" and imposing trade restrictions. Yonaguni, which already hosts a Self-Defense Force (SDF) radar base, remains a critical focal point in the regional security architecture.
