The disaster occurred late Wednesday night, February 18, 2026, in the Gul Rana Colony. The blast, which originated on the first floor, was so powerful that it brought down a significant portion of the structure, trapping several residents under tons of concrete and debris.

Rescue officials confirmed that the victims include a 10-year-old girl named Nazia and a 60-year-old man, Mohammad Riaz. While 14 people were rushed to local hospitals with injuries, emergency teams managed a miraculous rescue of a 14-year-old girl who was pulled alive from the rubble. The rescue operation, led by the Sindh Boy Scouts and specialized urban search and rescue teams, faced significant challenges due to the congested locality and narrow streets, which hindered the movement of heavy machinery.

Initial investigations by the District East police suggest the explosion was triggered by a gas leak, potentially from a cylinder or a gas suction machine. Authorities have cordoned off the area as technical experts work to determine the exact cause and assess the structural integrity of neighboring buildings. This tragedy follows a series of recent building safety concerns in Karachi, highlighting the urgent need for stricter infrastructure regulations in the city's densely populated neighborhoods.
