China Surpasses US in Nuclear Submarine Construction

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) reports that between 2021 and 2025, China launched 10 nuclear submarines, while the US added only 7. Beyond quantity, China has gained an edge in tonnage and technical capabilities. Experts note that intense activity at the Huludao Shipyard is a growing concern for the Pentagon.

Although the US retains a numerical advantage with 65 active nuclear submarines, China’s rapid buildup is narrowing the gap. Beijing possesses 12 nuclear and 46 diesel-electric submarines, unmatched in the US fleet. Notably, the Type-094 ballistic missile submarines are nuclear-capable, introducing a new strategic dimension internationally.

US Secretary of the Navy John F. has acknowledged that shipbuilding programs are facing budget overruns and delays. Analysts warn that China’s large fleet could partially offset the technological advantage of US submarines. By 2030, this may weaken Washington’s defensive posture in the Indo-Pacific region.
