India to Be Represented by Om Birla at Tarique Rahman’s Swearing-In Ceremony
Some reports also suggested that India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri may attend the event, though there has been no official confirmation so far.
According to the MEA, Birla’s participation reflects the deep-rooted and enduring friendship between the peoples of India and Bangladesh. It also reaffirms New Delhi’s commitment to the shared democratic values that bind the two neighboring nations.
The statement further noted that India welcomes Bangladesh’s democratic transition under the leadership of Tarique Rahman, highlighting the strong public mandate received in the recent election.
Following a landslide victory in the parliamentary polls, the BNP is preparing to form the government. At 60, Tarique Rahman is set to become the country’s first male head of government in 35 years.
On Tuesday (17 February), newly elected Members of Parliament will take oath, administered by Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin. Later in the day, the Prime Minister and members of the new cabinet will be sworn in by President Mohammad Shahabuddin. The Cabinet Division has completed all preparations for the ceremony.
The interim government has invited heads of state and government from 13 countries, including India and Pakistan, to attend the event. Additionally, Foreign Ministers from SAARC member states have been invited, according to Law Adviser Asif Nazrul.
