Japan Seizes Chinese Vessel, Diplomatic Tensions May Rise
According to Tokyo, the vessel attempted to flee after being ordered to stop for inspection. This marks the first such seizure of a Chinese vessel by Japan since 2022.
A report by Al Jazeera stated that the vessel was detained on Thursday, February 12. Japan’s Fisheries Agency said the boat was operating near the coast of Nagasaki Prefecture within Japan’s EEZ.
Authorities arrested the 47-year-old captain on suspicion of attempting to evade inspection. The vessel reportedly carried 10 additional crew members and was described by Japanese officials as a high-capacity “tiger net” fishing boat.
China has not yet issued an official response. Previously, Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi warned that Japan could consider military action if China attempted to forcibly take control of Taiwan.
In response to such remarks, China summoned Japan’s ambassador in Beijing and urged its citizens to reconsider travel and study plans in Japan.
