US Forces Alarmed by Advancements in Iranian Drone Technology
On Tuesday, February 3, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced in a statement that the drone was destroyed in self-defense to protect their nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln.
CENTCOM spokesperson Captain Tim Hawkins reported that an Iranian Shahed-139 model drone was approaching the aircraft carrier in an extremely dangerous manner. Despite repeated warnings, the drone did not change its course, prompting an F-35C stealth fighter jet launched from the carrier to shoot it down. At the time of the incident, the US fleet was positioned in international waters, approximately 800 kilometers off Iran's southern coast. US officials claim the drone approached with aggressive intent without any provocation.
While Tehran has not directly admitted to an attack, the semi-official news agency Tasnim reported that communication was lost between their control room and a Shahed-139 drone on a surveillance mission. However, some Iranian sources claim the drone successfully transmitted photos and data of the aircraft carrier before going missing.
Experts suggest that Iran's growing drone capabilities—particularly the Shahed, Mohajer, and Kamin series—are now a major concern for the US Navy. Just hours after Tuesday's incident, Washington raised another counter-allegation involving the harassment of the US-flagged commercial vessel 'MV Stena Imperative' by Iranian boats and drones in the Strait of Hormuz. Following Donald Trump’s stern warnings and ahead of the upcoming meeting in Istanbul, this "drone battle" has rendered Middle Eastern geopolitics even more uncertain.
