The crisis was ignited after the International Cricket Council (ICC) rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board's (BCB) request to move their group-stage matches from India to co-host Sri Lanka. Bangladesh cited security concerns following the controversial removal of pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) roster—a move allegedly directed by the BCCI. In response to the ICC's refusal, Bangladesh officially boycotted the tournament and has since been replaced by Scotland.

IOC’s "Zero Tolerance" on Political Interference
The IOC maintains a significantly stricter stance on political interference compared to the ICC. Sources told The Guardian that it is "unthinkable" for a country to be awarded the Olympic Games if there is a perceived risk of boycotts from other nations due to diplomatic or political friction.

The Precedent: Last year, the IOC suspended dialogue with Indonesia regarding its Olympic bid after the country refused to grant visas to Israeli athletes for a world championship event.

The Charter: Rule 50.2 of the Olympic Charter explicitly prohibits the expression of political or religious opinions at the Games, requiring host nations to ensure an inclusive environment for all participating territories.

Diplomatic Strain and Regional Solidarity
The sporting row comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Dhaka and New Delhi, exacerbated by recent border unrest and internal instability. The situation has gained regional momentum as Pakistan has reportedly considered boycotting the World Cup in solidarity with Bangladesh, further damaging India's image as an inclusive host for multi-national events.

The Road to 2036
While India was recently confirmed as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, the battle for the 2036 Olympics in Ahmedabad remains fierce, with Qatar appearing as the primary rival. Analysts believe that while the inclusion of cricket in the Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032 Olympics was a move to tap into the Indian market, the IOC will not compromise its core principles of political neutrality.

To remain a credible candidate, the report suggests India must demonstrate significant progress in stabilizing sporting and diplomatic relations with its neighbors, particularly Pakistan and Bangladesh.
