The announcement was made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday (January 29) following a high-level meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This move places the UK alongside 50 other nations, including France, Germany, and Australia, that already enjoy similar travel privileges. This visit marks the first by a British Prime Minister to China since 2018.

Commenting on the deal, PM Starmer emphasized its economic significance, stating that easing travel for business professionals will help UK firms expand their footprint in one of the world’s largest markets, thereby boosting domestic growth and jobs. Beyond the visa waiver, the two leaders also signed several agreements focused on tackling organized crime, curbing illegal migration, and exploring new avenues for bilateral trade liberalization.
