According to news agency ANI, the decision to pay tribute to the late leader was scheduled for the opening day of the 2026-27 Budget Session. This move comes after Khaleda Zia passed away on December 30, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.

The Budget Session is slated to commence with an address by President Droupadi Murmu to a joint sitting of both houses. Following the President’s speech, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha will follow their respective agendas to pay respects to departed dignitaries. Alongside Khaleda Zia, the Rajya Sabha will also honor former Indian MPs including L. Ganesan and Suresh Kalmadi.

Political analysts view this dual-house obituary as a rare and significant act of diplomatic courtesy toward a former head of government from a neighboring nation. It underscores the international stature of the three-time Prime Minister and serves as a testament to the enduring complexities and shared history of India-Bangladesh relations.

While the session will primarily focus on the Union Budget, scheduled to be presented on February 1, the first day’s proceedings will be defined by this tribute to a pivotal figure in South Asian politics. The current session is expected to continue until April 2.
