Trump Threatens Canada with 100% Tariff Over China Trade Deal
On Saturday, Trump took to his social media platform, "Truth Social," to vent his frustration. He stated that if Canada implements its trade deal with China, he will immediately slap a 100% tariff on all its products entering the U.S. This reaction was triggered after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing earlier this month to finalize an agreement that includes reduced tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) and Canadian agricultural products.
The friction is not limited to trade alone. During the World Economic Forum in Davos last week, Prime Minister Carney delivered a blunt speech criticizing the "weaponization of tariffs" and the breakdown of the rules-based international order. Although he did not name Trump directly, the U.S. President labeled Carney as "ungrateful" and "a confused globalist."
In his social media posts, Trump mockingly referred to the Prime Minister as "Governor Carney," a title he previously used to imply that Canada should be treated as the 51st U.S. state. The Canadian government has consistently rejected such rhetoric as insulting and a violation of its sovereignty.
If realized, these 100% tariffs could cause a severe economic deadlock between North America’s largest trading partners. Canada’s energy and automobile sectors are particularly vulnerable, as approximately three-quarters of its exports are bound for the United States. Economists warn that such a move could trigger unprecedented instability in global markets.
