Analysts suggest that beyond the ceremonial parades, the primary objective of this visit is to finalize the "India-EU Free Trade Agreement" (FTA), which has remained unresolved for two decades. While the Donald Trump-led U.S. administration threatens European allies with trade wars and remains firm on imposing additional tariffs on Indian goods, India and the European Union are elevating their economic ties to new heights.

Diplomatic experts view the invitation of European leaders to Republic Day as a powerful message to Washington, demonstrating that India’s foreign policy is not solely dependent on American decisions. Chitiij Bajpayee, a specialist at the London-based think tank Chatham House, noted that this move showcases India's ability to consolidate its strategic position on the world stage. Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and the European Commission President have both referred to this potential pact as the "mother of all deals."

A formal announcement regarding this historic agreement is expected during a high-level summit on January 27. This will mark India’s ninth free trade agreement in the past four years. Brussels is also eager to tap into India's massive market as it seeks to reduce its commercial reliance on China. Conversely, India aims to mitigate the negative impacts of U.S. tariffs through this partnership.

Completion of this deal after twenty years of negotiations is expected to bring a major transformation to the global trade map. It is also seen as a bold step by India to move away from its long-standing protectionist shell and embrace a more integrated global economic role.
