The remarks were made during a regular press briefing at the UN headquarters on Wednesday (January 21).

Highlights from the Briefing: During the briefing, a journalist pointed out that at least 1,400 people were killed during the July uprising and noted that a Bangladeshi court has held Sheikh Hasina responsible for these killings. The journalist asked whether the Secretary-General would urge the Indian government to extradite her to ensure justice.

In response, Farhan Haq avoided naming specific countries but underscored the importance of accountability. He said, “We believe there should be accountability. As you know, the United Nations itself provided information regarding the killings that took place. Clearly, there needs to be accountability, but it must be done with fundamental respect for international law.”

The UN has consistently advocated for a neutral investigation and fair trial for the human rights violations during the protests. Haq's comments once again highlighted the organization’s commitment to a transparent and lawful judicial process.
